The Cowboys sent the Jets a 2027 first rounder and 2026 2nd rounder and former first round bust Mazi Smith for Quinnen Williams. The first rounder will be the higher of the two between Dallas and the Packers according to Rapoport. A first and second for a defensive lineman is a massive bet:

Sidenote: How funny is that tweet from Ian Rapoport? They don’t even hide it anymore that they’re being texted what to say from front offices and agents. Oh, Jerry Jones values interior defensive lineman? The guy who has plenty of contract disputes with players during his time owning the Cowboys? The guy who just got rid of his best defensive lineman in a decade? Tell me more, Ian. I guess this is a small price you have to pay to get texts from your sources a millisecond before Adam Schefter does.

Back to the trade! I won’t put my Kelly Green-colored glasses on and shit on this trade. Sure, the gamble is unbelievable, but you have a former All-Pro who is locked up until 2027 anchoring your defensive line. The Cowboys’ offense has been stellar this season. The defense sucks. They only have a 5% chance to make the playoffs according to NFL.com after losing to the Cardinals Monday Night. The optics of the 11th place team in the NFC buying at the deadline looks terrible, but at least it looks like Jerry is keeping an eye on his football team while running his $100 billion gas empire. I thought for sure he had given up on the season. I thought Logan Wilson was going to be the big upgrade. This is clearly a move for next year when the Packers, presumably anyway, will be solid as well and they hope both firsts to be late rounders. And here’s something even better if you’re a Cowboys fan, now that they’re trading picks they won’t have to draft:

This could become a move we’re looking at next year that makes the Cowboys contenders.

On second thought…Jerry Jones might be the worst cap guy of all-time:

Kinkead: Williams is owed $22 million next year and is going to want a huge extension
