Eagles Fan Aaron Rai Says Aronimink Crowd Was “Incredible from Start to Finish”
England native Aaron Rai won the PGA Championship at Aronimink after shooting -5 on Sunday, finishing -9 for the tournament and claiming his first major.
Afterward, he had some nice things to say about the crowd and then we got either a cool moment or a cringe moment depending on your personal opinion:
“They were incredible from start to finish. Honestly, I think out of all the majors, the biggest and loudest atmosphere comes at the PGA. You guys definitely lived up to it this week. And me personally (from) England, your support for me was absolutely incredible. I really appreciate that from the very start to the finish.”
People have very strong opinions about doing the Eagles chant at non-Eagles events, i.e. Phillies games or your daughter’s ballet recital or at the PGA Championship at Aronimink. I think it’s fine within reason, like the guys trolling Scottie Scheffler the other day. He’s a Cowboys fan and got a laugh out of it, so he played along and it was no big deal. But there are diminishing returns on the Eagles chant. You do it once or twice? Cool, everybody has a laugh. But it gets real corny when you do it over and over and over and over again. I don’t know where the arbitrary line is, but it goes from harmless to overkill almost immediately.
And then you have your people who think it’s annoying that fans have to make everything about the Eagles, and that’s understandable, but what can you really say? They love the Birds and the Birds are good. There will be fewer EAGLES chants if the team ends up being shit at some point.
Anyway, some folks were suggesting that Rai should be the honorary Eagles captain when they play the Jaguars in London. Rai was born in England, but he currently lives in… Jacksonville. But now that he won his first major in the Philadelphia area, he has to denounce the Jag-Wires forever and carry the Birds as his de facto American football team.
