You may recall that North Penn and La Salle guy Sean McDermott disappointed all of us with his fugazi winter takes on the tush push.

The former Eagles defensive coordinator, now coaching the Bills, thought the play should be banned because of health and safety reasons, even though his team ran it with the second-most frequency over the past two seasons. Sources say that even the corrupt and useless politicians in Washington were impressed with the display of hypocrisy.

McDermott’s brother, Tim, is the Philadelphia Union’s Chief Business Officer and gave a diplomatic answer to the question on a recent in-house team podcast:

YouTube video

“I’ve spoken to him a little bit about it, and at the end of the day I think his perspective is, if someone can get catastrophically hurt, that’s probably not a good thing. It hasn’t happened, doesn’t mean it can’t happen or won’t happen, or the degree of which it could happen is higher probability. I think that’s kind of where he leans. At the end of the day, to be on the defensive side, in particular, stopping that play, puts you in a position where you have to potentially put your head down, neck down, and that can cause a big problem in the sport of football. I think that’s kind of where he’s been on it, that if it’s something dangerous to the players we should be avoiding that.”

Yeah alright. It’s a diplomatic answer, and the thought makes sense, but we’ve been over this before. Every play in football is dangerous because you have the best athletes in the world violently ramming into each other, typically with velocity. If everything risky was removed from football, football as we know it would cease to exist.

Tim McDermott – good guy, by the way. He once had to physically restrain me from going after 6’4″ Jim Curtin in the hallway, but that’s another story for another time. Have a great weekend!
