What is the Market for A.J. Brown Outrage Content?
This is not a scientific poll, but we asked Twitter followers for their stance on the A.J. Brown trade and ensuing rumormongering (“A.J. Brown stuff”), and 85% are over it:
Admittedly, the question was very vague, but this is totally lopsided in favor of enough already / move on. If you go talk to Eagles fans at Wawa or text your buddies in the group chat, you know, casual folks who aren’t chronically online, they’ll probably tell you they’re just happy for the saga to conclude. That’s the sentiment I’ve got in basic chatter with people around here. They seem to be happy that this thing is over and now we can all move on.
What stood out to me is that only 177 people voted in this poll. We have 131,000 Twitter followers, presumably inflated by bots and/or people who don’t log on very often, but we usually get a few thousand responses to polls. This tells me that a lot of people cared so little that they just skipped right over the poll entirely. They are so over the A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts drama that they couldn’t even be arsed to say that they’re over it.
Which begs the question –
What even is the market for A.J. Brown outrage in Philadelphia sports media and content creation? I think it’s a very small one. I think it’s the 1% of diehards who want to talk about the Eagles in June, and/or WIP types who live inside of the midnight green echo chamber. You look outside and it’s 85 degrees and sunny (finally), the sky is blue and the grass is green. The Phillies seemingly have their shit together and the NHL and NBA finals are taking place as the World Cup gets set to begin. Who are these people mustering the energy to give even half a shit about A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts drama right now? A.J. wanted out, he got out, and he was also the best receiver the Eagles have had since Terrell Owens. We went to two Super Bowls with A.J. on the team, and obliterated the Chiefs in the second one. Even if the ending was messy, and disappointing, he is never going to be Ben Simmons or T.O. or Scott Rolen or any of those guys.
So I’m good. I think the overwhelmingly majority of Eagles fans are also good. The A.J. Brown horse has been dead for a long time. Poor horse. Imagine beating something that is now just a dusty pile of equine bones.
But this is Philadelphia and we must bludgeon everyone to death with Eagles outrage 24/7, 365 days a year.
