Phillies Exercise Jose Alvarado’s Option
Some Phils news:
The option is for $9 million and takes Alvarado through his age 31 season, then he becomes an unrestricted free agent. As Luke mentioned recently, the club option was thought to be a no-brainer at one point, then the PED suspension took place. Alvarado missed 80 games, made a brief cameo, and then was shut down with a forearm strain before the playoffs even started. It turned out to be a rather disgraceful season for the Phils lefty, and his absence surely played a role in the midseason acquisitions of Jhoan Duran and David Robertson.
He’ll get a chance to turn it around in a contract year. Alvarado finished with 26 innings pitched over the course of 28 games, which was the fewest innings he’s thrown since the 2020 Tampa season in which he had the shoulder injury. He finished this year with a 3.81 ERA, a 1.308 WHIP, a 2.4 walks per-9 number and an 11.1 strike outs per-9 number.
