The Alec Bohm Trade Rumors Continue to Pick Up Steam

The Alec Bohm trade rumors are starting to pick up some quick steam. Buster Olney of ESPN talked Thursday on Baseball Tonight, and dropped a pretty telling nugget on the trade talks:

“What I’m hearing from other teams is (Alec Bohm) is going to be traded. Like he’s out there a bunch. And they say the Phillies have been around long enough to know that they could squash that if they wanted to, they could go out, they could tell whisper to their reporters ‘yeah Bohm’s not really available’. They’re not doing that.” 

This follows an earlier report from Jeff Passan, who noted that Bohm “finds himself on the trade block… his first-half OPS was nearly 150 points higher than in the second half, and the Phillies are looking to shake up their team after a disappointing postseason ouster by the Mets”

This is now multiple reports on Bohm’s trade market in the last three days. Passan’s story came out Tuesday, while AJ Pierzynski said that the Phillies aren’t happy with Bohm’s attitude, which is one of the reasons why he’s on the block.

Bohm was a disappointment in the 2nd half, and even more of a disappointment in the NLDS vs. the Mets. He slashed .077/.143/.077 in 13 at-bats vs. New York in October, logging just one hit, a single in Game 3 where he’d eventually get thrown out at second base trying to stretch it to a double.

Bohm has yet to post a season-long OPS over .800 in his entire career other than his 44-game COVID season. His 2024 was a step forward from the last two years, but he disappeared when it mattered, and his body language gave Phillies fans a small ounce of hope for his Philadelphia future.

If the Alex Bregman rumors have any bit of truth to them, that would require a hole at third base for the 2x World Series Champion to fill. Bohm would be on his way out, and the Phillies could use his two years of club control (through the 2026 season) to acquire an impact relief pitcher.
