Okay, let’s start with the easy one:

The JaVale McGee Trade

Earlier today, the Sixers traded draft rights to Cenk Akyol to the Denver Nuggets for the hilarious JaVale McGee, the draft rights to the hilariously named Chukwudiebere “Chu Chu” Maduabum, and a 2015 first round pick. That pick comes from the Thunder and is top-18 protected this year, top-15 protected in 2016 and 2017. If all of those protections vest(?), it turns into a second round pick in 2018 and a second round pick in 2019. There will be a lot of laughs about the Sixers trading for McGee, but this is a great deal for Sam Hinkie.

Now, the other ones.

The MCW Trade

Michael Carter-Williams goes to the Bucks in a three-team deal which brings the Sixers another protected 2015 first round pick. That pick comes from the Lakers and is top-5 protected this year, top-3 protected in 2016, and fully unprotected in 2017. It’s a first round pick– it’s just a matter of what year.

The K.J. McDaniels Trade

McDaniels heads to Hinkie’s buddy Daryl Morey’s Rockets, and in return the Sixers get Denver or Minnesota’s 2015 second round pick and point guard Isaiah Canaan. Got it? Cool.

So where do we go now? The McDaniels deal stings a bit because in a year where fans really bought in, he was an entertaining, fun and captivating part of the on-court product. But, last summer, he negotiated a one-year deal so he could get out of this hell hole more quickly. Between that, and the Tweets from his mom, he probably wasn’t going to re-sign with the Sixers.

And the MCW deal? It makes total sense. Hinkie and the front-office never seemed to be sold on MCW — as evidenced by his permanent spot on the “available” list — and got what may amount to a top-10 pick in return (top 7 if they’re incredibly fortunate).
