Sixers Broadcast Team Comes in 29th in Awful Announcing’s Local NBA Rankings
Awful Announcing has been running fan polls for years now rating local broadcast teams. They ask readers to hand out a letter grade to a TV crew and then compile the data and put together a ranking.
This year, the Kate Scott / Alaa Abdelnaby combination came in 29th out of 30 teams. Taryn Hatcher is included in the group even though she left NBC Sports Philadelphia at the end of 2025.
Here’s the blurb:
This might sound like damning them with faint praise, but the 76ers’ broadcast booth score is improving for the second straight year. However, those slight improvements aren’t helping them out of the rankings’ basement just yet. The comments revealed deeply polarizing feelings about the broadcast. Supporters praise Scott for her professionalism and for “overcoming a tough Philly crowd,” while critics find her style “exhausting” and overly biased. The loss of Taryn Hatcher was noted as a significant blow to the broadcast’s overall quality. Some praised Tom McGinnis’s radio-style play-by-play as a high point when he’s on the call.
AA says the most common grade for Kate and Alaa was a C, with 33.9% of respondents handing out that letter. The percentage of A, B, or C grades was 61.3% and this is the third season in a row that the Sixers crew finished 29th out of 30 NBA broadcasts.
For some context, the Knicks’ broadcast finished 1st. They’ve got Mike Breen, Walt Frazier, and a slew of others who participate in that MSG broadcast. The Nets were second and Bulls third. They’ve got Ian and Noah Eagle and Adam Amin on those broadcasts, respectively, so national guys doing local PBP for an NBA team, similar to Kate Scott. The Warriors’ broadcast came in 30th with 39.8% of respondents handing out an F.
It’s hard to compare broadcasts unless you’re an NBA junkie because casuals probably couldn’t tell you a single thing about the Kings’ or Pelicans’ teams, for instance. But based on how Sixers fans graded Kate and Alaa, they are… less enthused about the local product than fans of the other NBA teams.
Have at it in the Facebook and Twitter comments.
