Cecily Tynan Retiring After More Than 30 Years at Action News

Cecily Tynan couldn’t keep calm because she had big news coming up, and after much speculation online and on this website about what it would be, the news is out: Cecily is retiring next month after more than 30 years as an Action News meteorologist:
“I have a personal announcement. After more than 30 years at Action News, I will be retiring in a few weeks. And honestly, I’m thrilled about it. This has been in the works for a while. I’ve been counting down here at the station. Both my children have graduated from high school. My daughter is going to college in less than a month and she’ll be running cross country and track, and my husband and I – we plan to attend every single one of her meets. So it’s the right time for me. It’s the right time for my family. And I’m so very thankful. I’ve had such a long career at this station, and it’s the best thing: I have got time to say goodbye. My final broadcast will be in more than a month from now: The six o’clock news on Monday, August 31, so mark that on your calendars. And hopefully, Brian, we will have quiet weather that week. No tornado warnings, please. Cause I want the time to say goodbye and afterwards a huge party here at the station.”
This is great. Good for Cecily. She’s been grinding it out in broadcasting for over 35 years. That’s a long time to do anything, and being in TV seems particularly demanding. Especially weather. The weather never stops. It just keeps on coming. And everyone’s always getting mad at you when you get it wrong. Imagine 35 years of that. I’m picturing The Weather Man with Nicolas Cage. Top 10 movie for me. Maybe top 5. So damn funny, wildly underrated, and it paints a pretty rough picture of the weather life:
But Cecily’s days of getting blamed for the weather are just about over. According to this writeup about the announcement on 6ABC, she’s got some way cooler stuff on the docket now:
“I’m so honored to have been a member of the 6abc Action News team for more than three decades, starting as the station’s first-ever weekend meteorologist, then becoming its first female chief meteorologist. I’m proud of the work we’ve done and thankful to 6abc viewers for trusting me with their weather forecasts,” said Tynan. “Now, instead of forecasting snow, I’m looking forward to spending my winters in Florida water skiing, traveling and having lots of quality time with my husband, Greg; two adult children, Luke and Emma; and three rescue pups, Nala, Shelby and Charlie. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Cecily is also beloved for her years of work promoting animal welfare around Philly. She’s done a ton of really great stuff there, like spearheading 6ABC’s weekly ‘Shelter Me’ segments and using her platform on Instagram to help dogs find homes – all while somehow finding time to be “a tournament slalom water-skier and a four-time sub-3-hour marathoner, as well as a former world-class professional duathlete and a Top 10 age-group finisher at the 2003 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii,” according to that 6ABC article.
Damn. She rules. Congrats on your retirement, Cecily. But before you go, if you wouldn’t mind, during every broadcast from now until August 31st, please instigate a new fight with Howard Eskin. Let’s get some good ones in for the road. Could be fun. Thanks.
