The person who the renter thought was the owner was actually a craigslist scammer and the true owner had no idea a stranger was living in her formerly vacant home. The scammersÕ phone # has been disconnected, and heÕs $4,000 richer.

I’m learning a lot about squatters today. Pretty fascinating stuff. Let me get you up to speed here on all my new squatter knowledge.

First things first:

Beyond the definition, I learned there’s a new TV show about it on A&E called Squatters. Here’s the IMDB description:

Flash Shelton and his team confront squatters nationwide, using bold tactics to help homeowners reclaim their property. Each mission brings tense, dangerous situations as they fight for justice.

Flash Shelton. His name is Flash. So awesome. Here’s the trailer for the show:

I love this guy. This is the most Flash Shelton-looking guy imaginable:

He calls himself “The Squatter Hunter” in the trailer. Sick nickname. Also, while explaining his squatter-hunting origin story, he very dramatically says:“I took matters into my own hands. I learned all about the laws.” Badass. Hell yeah. Flash learned all about the laws. That’s what’s up.

At this point, I’m already bought in. I’m going to watch this show. I’m going to watch Flash. I didn’t need to be sold on it anymore — but then I saw this post on Reddit, and became even more intrigued:

Three episodes in Philly seems like a lot, right? That was my reaction, anyway. But then I thought, “Well, maybe there are like 50 episodes in this first season, and three actually isn’t that many.” So I Googled it…

And discovered there have only been twelve episodes released and four more scheduled. Does Philly have a huge squatting problem?

I Googled that too, and found that there are no official records kept on squatting in America, so there’s no real way to tell which cities have it the worst — but according to the responses in this Reddit thread, it seems like Philly has it pretty rough:

Wild stuff. This seems like an extremely bad problem to have.

Here are the descriptions for the Philly episodes:

S1.E7 ∙ The Squatter Standoff – Flash heads to Philadelphia to help Paul, who returns from a stint in Vegas to start a family with his fiancée, only to find a stranger has taken over his Pennsylvania home.

S1.E10 ∙ The Fake Lease – A young couple in Philadelphia lists their home for sale, only to find a squatter already living in it. When confronted by Flash’s team, he is completely shocked and produces a fraudulent lease. But can Flash see through the scam?

S1.E11 ∙ Locked Out in Philly – During renovations, Andrew’s Philadelphia home was taken over by squatters who moved in, changed the locks, and installed security cameras. What begins as a straightforward case quickly escalates into a tense standoff with authorities.

Here’s to hoping Flash can save our city once and for all…
