Review
BetStars NJ is a very good sports betting app. It is clean and easy to use. Odds and action are laid out in an obvious way, and unique odds boosts and promos are clearly called out and add an element of fun to the app. The deposit methods and aggressive promo make it worth trying for anyone looking for an alternative to the big US brands.

Not bad.
Currently, they are also running a series of boosts and promos.
Bet $25 and get a free $5 bet— pretty straightforward, available every week
NFL 2 Minute Drill– if you place any NFL moneyline bet and your team is leading with two minutes to go and loses, you’ll get a refund up to $20
Super Boost— get a boost on football 3-bet parlays
Stars Stack— better odds on multiple players scoring touchdowns
Lock in Your Profits— similar to DraftKings, you have the option to cash out of live bets, which has been popular and adds a whole new dimension to betting
Spin and Bet— spin the wheel to get up to a 10x odds boost
Overall, these are just really fun options. While I wouldn’t recommend basing your entire strategy on any promo offer, they can add a casual element to the betting experience, while also occasionally being a good strategic play.
Sports offered
As expect, BetStars, which uses its own proprietary technology platform, offers action on just about every sport you can imagine, including:
Baseball
Basketball

Deposit methods
Being familiar to the online gambling space, BetStars predictably offers a range of deposit options: Visa, MasterCard, eChecks, PayNearMe, PokerStars Play+, Neteller, Resorts Casino, Instant Online Banking, Skrill and PayPal. This is probably second only to SugarHouse Sportsbook and the wide range of options they offer.
BetStars NJ initial thoughts
I’ve spent a good chunk of the summer chronicling this stuff, and from the beginning it was clear that BetStars would be one of the top companies to challenge DraftKings and FanDuel. They are mobile-focused and have experience in New Jersey with their popular poker app. All of this means that, unlike the casino apps, they have more of a focus on technology to compete with the daily fantasy brands while also understanding the sports betting market.
The most important thing is initial customer acquisition. While DraftKings and FanDuel have largely (and rightfully) relied on their well-established brand names, the casino sportsbooks and international companies will have to get inventive to lure new customers. So far, PlayMGM and Caesars haven’t done anything to stand out – no deposit bonus, lack of iOS app, poor interface – while several others have done well to differentiate themselves.
PointsBet, an Australian sportsbook which isn’t even live yet in New Jersey, will offer spread betting that allows users to win (or lose) multiples on over-under bets. Really interesting. Meanwhile, BetStars comes out swinging with an attention-grabbing bonus that almost guarantees new sign ups.
App availability
BetStars’ NJ sports betting app is available on Android and iOS and, soon, through a web-based interface. Their iOS app originally lived inside PokerStars until a standalone version was released on October 21, 2018.
BetStars’ app has been live in Europe for some time and it will carry over the same general look and feel, with US-based promos and call to actions. Here are some BetStars NJ screenshots:
Things we like
BetStars NJ offers odds boost on popular stacks. For instance, for Thursday Night Football tonight, you can get Andy Dalton, Joe Mixon and AJ Green to all score at +350– all from the click of a banner at the top of the app.
BetStars NJ also offers the popular cashout option which allows users to minimize their losses or ensure a profit before the end of an event.
And while BetStars’ mobile interface isn’t maybe the most fancy or modern – that one goes to FanDuel – it’s super clean and easy to read. Almost like Google, it just makes sense. All the information is laid out in a clean and easy to read way. It’s no frills, but highly functional, which is exactly what you want when your own money is on the line.
Meanwhile, players will also enjoy the Super Boost feature which offers pumped up odds and better payouts on predetermined parlays.
The app’s cleanliness and entertaining offers makes for an easy to use and fun wagering experience.
History
BetStars, which is owned by Canadian company The Stars Group and has had a lot of success in Europe, is a mobile-first product built on the PokerStars platform. They launched their sports betting app in the US in late September in New Jersey under the Resorts Digital license, which is also used by DraftKings.
According to Google Trends data, BetStars has lagged behind DraftKings and FanDuel in terms of interest, for the obvious reason of not having anywhere near the same level of brand recognition. At least not yet. They had held off on their marketing push until the iOS app arrived, so now you can expect to see more of their branding.
A modern betting app
BetStars is the best of the international brands competing in the US betting space. First and foremost, they offer a user-friendly app. It lacks the slick interface of FanDuel and the familiarly of DraftKings, but it’s clean and simple and just works. The learning curve is very low.
So while BetStars has been slow on the uptick, they are worth checking out, both for the user-friendly interface and the range of fun promos and options they offer for casual and experienced bettors. You can download both the Android and iOS apps by clicking bet now.
