Did Chip Kelly Do Something Unconventional Today?
By Kyle Scott
Published:
He did.
First day of training camp and Chip Kelly’s funhouse was already open for business. After a 45-minute “high-performance mindset” meeting, music blared over the redesigned four-field layout at the NovaCare Complex. Brad Wing and Matthew Tucker each failed a conditioning test, which, apparently, required players to run 20 or so 60-yard-dashes in the heat. Wing and Tucker (great Top Gun names!) will have to complete the test on Friday with the veterans if they wish to play for this football team.
Meanwhile, over behind the mirror maze, wide receivers had to grab balls while giving PVC pipes a reach-around before running their routes:
I love this drill. Game-changing catches are the ones made around a defender, though presumably one thicker than what you see here. Unless, of course, you’re going up against…
… there it is. Well done, Eliot.
Besides the Elizabeth Berkley drill™, Coach Bombay had his players practice with Nerf balls. A video documentation via Jimmy Kempski:

Goddamn Chip and his visor (!!!), always thinking. I’ve quick-compiled a running list of Kelly’s zaniness whilst listening to an upbeat mix of Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson songs:
Diet.
Stripper poles.
Nerf balls.
I can’t wait to see what comes tomorrow.
