This is what the 2011 season has come to, folks.
Update: I was told by a store employee that this picture was taken on Saturday. And, as Dan Gross first discovered, Howard was in the store today, too, but on crutches, not a Rascal.
H/T to (@ChelsCoyle) and (@Hadji484) for the photo

How much money are we wasting on him to watch balls fly by? I'm happy he may not be back to start the season..

Posted by: Dewey Babcock | October 11, 2011 at 05:28 PM
and let the ryan howard haters start now. omg he hits over 100 RBI every single year and hits 30+ homers. he is just the worst player ever!!!
Posted by: AJ | October 11, 2011 at 05:28 PM
You're so fucking lame Kyle. Seriously.

EPIC

i saw a comment earlier that summarized the PROBLEM with ryan howard and the phillies.
F.A.I.L.U.R.E.T.O.A.D.A.P.T.
yea. dude hits 100rbi and 30hr a season. GREAT. (no, really. great)
but with a lineup on base as much as they were all season... ryan howard should be leading the majors in RBI for the last four years. his FAILURE to adapt to effective pitching is totally unacceptable. particularly for the price philly paid for him. greats adapt to the situation and make applesauce for lack of a better analogy. this guy has had that ridiculous shift put on him for three years. he still hasn't adapted. a lot of fans BOOED mike schmidt for calling these guys out and you scoffed. mike schmidt is god compared to these phillies and he said, (not verbatim obviously) 'ryan howard fails to adapt.'
the finger can be pointed in lots of directions (charlie/jimmy/chooch/polanco/lee/oswalt i'm looking at you) but i think this is one of the biggest issues at hand.
i've got the perspective of a former athlete having watched his prime slide by thanks to a complex ACL/MCL/PCL meniscus tear, but honestly, you only get to do this once. make what you can of it because there's only regret to stare you in the face when you're done and washed up.
maybe tearing his achilles tendon will help his decision making regarding laying off low and away junkballs in the dirt.

Probably the one time ever that someone can call him Barbaro and get away with it.

Howard being the last out only made him a scapegoat for the series, when in reality he was the main reason why they won game 1 and almost won game 2. Cliff Lee signed with the Phillies to win a championship, and then blew a 4-0 lead by throwing BP for a game. It's difficult to imagine the Phillies losing the series if Cliff Lee did his part in game 2. Get well, Ryno.

Alicia, you are a moron. I hope you never sustain that kind of injury and if you do, I hope you get more sympathy than you've shown The Big Piece.

You all need to read Bill Conlin's great article on Ryan a few months back when he posted all his numbers and what he has done. He's such a class act and a good guy. He was playing with a bad wheel to begin with and that friggin cortisone did not make it any better. He did drive in 6 runs the 1st two games more than the rest of the lineup but he gets the blame. You'll miss his RBI's the start of the season. By the way, look up who had the most go ahead RBI's this year!
Posted by: DS | October 11, 2011 at 06:44 PM
Let me preface this by saying I am a fan of Ryan Howard. He is not the scapegoat simply because he had the last out. Sure others had their issues and Cliff Lee's failure to finish off a gift wrapped win was sure one of them. But 0 for 14 or whatever Howard's final slump was is too much to overlook, especially when he posted similar numbers last post season when it counted most as well.
We can argue stats all day. Howard puts up big stats year after year, there is no denying that. That's what a good player is supposed to do. But there is a fundamental difference between a good player (even a really good player) and a great player. A great player carries the team when the team needs it most -- something that Howard has failed to do in 2 consecutive post-seasons.

WTF's a "biter commenter"?
Posted by: Iron Balls McGinty | October 11, 2011 at 08:06 PM
Even if I actually cared about RBI (a completely team-dependent stat), Howard has been in significant decline there for the past two seasons.
What used to be 45/140 is now 30/100. That's kind of an issue. And it's the Plymouth Meeting store.

Plymouth Meeting has a Whole Foods? Nice!

Ryan's good during the season, chokes in the playoffs. It's been proven several years in a row now. Believe me, it pains me to say this...

Are you telling me he doesn't have anyone that can pick up a few things for him at the store?? It's not like it was much, a scooter-basketful at most.

I had an epiphany a couple of days ago when leaving the Denver airport. In the last 6 months the airport parking management has replaced pay booth attendants with self-serve technology that allows drivers to speed up their exit from the parking garage by not having to deal with anyone. The result has been not only faster service for the customers but also has given the airport management the ability to cut their expenses through a reduction in staffing.
