In the least surprising news of all time, Jonathan Papelbon was a total jackass behind the closed doors of the Nats’ clubhouse. As Dan Steinberg of DC Sports Bog tells it – via Deadspin – Paps would blast a terrible pro-Trump “comedy” song while reporters were in the clubhouse:

Now maybe players don’t, or shouldn’t, care whether the home fans like them. If a Nationals player did care, though, he probably wouldn’t have wanted to wear a T-shirt reading “Obama can’t ban these guns” to his let’s-make-amends spring training news conference. Nor would he have, on multiple occasions, played a political anthem while reporters were inside the Nats clubhouse.

The ditty was called “Vote For Trump,” and it included promises that “the wall will get built by Mexico” and that Trump would “bring back country [and] get rid of rap,” also noting that “if you don’t like it you can all just kiss our ass.”

The song is by comedian Rodney Carrington, though any sense of comedy here was lost on Papelbon:

Somewhere, Brett Myers cracks a pencil in half, furious he didn’t write this.

Now, is blasting a song called “Vote for Trump” in a locker room the worst thing Paps has done? It’s barely top-25. But for a dude who isn’t getting the job done anymore and was only really loved in Boston – and what does that say about Boston? – his antics are tired and childish. Bringing Paps on was the Nationals’ first mistake. Not firing him into the sun after he choked their MVP was the second. Finally releasing him was the first thing they’ve done right in a long time.
