The Home Run Derby is back.

It was fun watching Rhys Hoskins upset top seed Jesus Aguilar to kick off the quarterfinals, but the semifinals and the final round were so damn fun to watch, wven if Hoskins was eliminated by Kyle Schwarber.

Once the semis got underway, Schwarber and Bryce Harper turned it on. Both of those guys wanted to win badly. But Harper, looking like baseball’s version of Captain America in front of his hometown D.C. fans, stole the show.

Down six to Schwarber in the final round, Harper hit six dingers in 30 seconds:

He earned himself an extra 30 seconds since he hit two homers over 440 feet, and used that time to beat Schwarber. And they all knew when he hit it:

Poor balls:

It was a great night for baseball. And then we find out Manny Machado might be traded to Philly before the regular season restarts. My oh my. Adonis Medina will be part of the package going to Baltimore. There was also a rumor about J.A. Happ returning to Philadelphia.

So with that, the Crossed Up crew discuss Machado, along with other Phillies topics, in this week’s episode.

The Roundup:

Speaking of podcasts, there’s a brand new episode of the Crossing Broadcast that discusses Machado and the disappointing 2008 Phillies documentary. It wasn’t the best and felt meh.

Summer League is over for the Sixers, so now the GM hunt should continue. One name that the Sixers reportedly tried to persuade to come over: Daryl Morey. He’s the reigning Executive of the Year and worked with Sam Hinkie before he went to the Sixers.

The team also made the Amir Johnson one-year signing official.

Despite some shooting concerns, Zhaire Smith looks like a very good passer.

But there may have been a collective under-selling of his passing ability, even if Smith was a little overzealous with no-look or look away passes out in Vegas. Without venturing into territory that was overly risky, Smith was able to find pockets of space in which to hit teammates, whether he was finding corner shooters or dropping off passes to big men in the paint.

A lot of Smith’s assists or near assists weren’t necessarily high degree of difficulty plays, but they do not fit within the framework of “former power forward” that we see used to describe his overall game. Unlike a lot of high-flying athletes, Smith doesn’t just go barreling into situations, and instead showed a fairly high level of patience for plays to develop around him, especially in transition.

What to expect from the tight ends and offensive tackles in training camp?

Doug Pederson won yet another golf bet against Sean Payton. Let’s hope they win the football game as well.
