He returned. And so did the winning ways for the Eagles, barely.

Carson Wentz started out well with a touchdown to Dallas Goedert on the first drive, but was a little rusty overall. In the end, he helped lead the Birds to a 20-16 victory over Andrew Luck and the Colts.

In the final quarter with the Birds down three, Wentz and the offense went on a drive that lasted more than 11 minutes and consisted of 17 plays for the game-winning Wendell Smallwood score. The 17 plays were the most for any team on a scoring drive this season.

On the other end, the Colts were close to striking distance but the “bend, don’t break” defense held again. On fourth down, Derek Barnett was able to sack Luck to pretty much end things.

The Birds are 2-1 and despite that, they don’t look anything like they did last year. And that’s fine. Wentz loved his tight ends, which isn’t a surprise. The offense is still depleted but maybe Alshon Jeffery returns soon. He was “questionable” to play this weekend despite it being obvious he wasn’t going to be active.

Up next is a trip to Nashville to take on the Titans. Kevin will have more on the game later this morning. But enjoy Wentz’s nice jacket:

The Roundup:

Remember when the Phillies were good this year and led the NL East? Good times.

They got swept by the Braves this weekend in Atlanta. The Phils had to watch the Braves win the division on Saturday and were officially eliminated from the wild card hunt yesterday. They’re 78-77 and start a four-game series on the road for the final time against the Rockies. Zach Eflin will take the mound for the 8:40 PM first pitch.

The good news: According to Jon Heyman, it looks like they might be the leaders to land both Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. The team is also willing to trade nearly anyone that isn’t Aaron Nola or Rhys Hoskins.

The Sixers opened up training camp on Saturday in Camden. Head coach Brett Brown discussed the new rule changes the Board of Governors passed.

What will be some of the biggest stories to watch from camp?

Media day was on Friday and everyone was available. Including Markelle Fultz, who said he didn’t have the “yips.”

The Flyers preseason continued Friday with an overtime loss to the Islanders. They’ll play Boston tonight at home at 7 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia +. The team did make five cuts, with Danick Martel being claimed by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

GM Ron Hextall isn’t ruling out Carter Hart making the big club.

Sunday, general manager Ron Hextall added to the ongoing drama by declaring Michal Neuvirth doubtful for the season opener in Vegas with an injury he labeled as “not day to day,” which leaves the Flyers with Brian Elliott, Anthony Stolarz and Carter Hart as their only healthy goaltending options.

As he did with Gostisbehere three years ago, Hextall is hesitant to heap too much praise on Hart despite the rookie’s impressive body of work in the preseason with a 1.20 goals against average and a .957 save percentage, and ideally would prefer the 20-year-old Hart to receive a significant workload in Lehigh Valley before he’s thrust into the NHL spotlight.

“If it’s right for the team, sometimes you have to do it,” Hextall said. “I haven’t ruled out anybody who’s on the ice with our team right now.”

Finally, Kyle actually likes the team’s mascot hunt.

The Union continued their winning ways in a 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City. They’ll take on the Houston Dynamo in Houston for the US Open Cup Wednesday night.
