The Phillies had a little bit of everything this weekend out in Pittsburgh.

One day after Hector Neris infuriated the Dodgers dugout, the Phillies defeated the Pirates 6-1 in their series opener. Jake Arrieta went 5 2/3 and gave up one run on six hits with four strikeouts. The highlight was a Jean Segura 13-pitch at-bat that ended with him winning a race to first that scored a big insurance run in the eighth inning.

Saturday wasn’t too kind for the Phils, as Joe Musgrove stymied the team’s bats by going six innings of one-run, two-hit baseball with eight strikeouts in the Phillies’ 5-1 loss. Pittsburgh got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third, as the team celebrated their 1979 World Series Champion squad. But the highlight of the night was the uniform matchup, easily the best there’s been all year in the Majors.

On Sunday, with recently signed pitcher Drew Smyly on the mound (the team also acquired Mike Morin from the Twins for bullpen depth), the Phillies needed extra innings to grab a series win. Smyly went six innings and gave up a run on four hits with eight strikeouts in his debut, which manager Gabe Kapler said reminded him of Cliff Lee on a day when Roy Halladay was being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. But the difference was a Rhys Hoskins solo home run in the 11th that gave the Phils a 2-1 win. Ranger Suarez got the win after pitching the 10th and 11th innings.

The Phils are off today but get back to action with a two-game series in Detroit on Tuesday. Aaron Nola kicks things off before Vince Velasquez gets the nod the day after.
