Your Thursday Morning Roundup
It was only two games, and it was the Tigers, but it’s still a sweep.
The Phillies wrapped up their two-game series in Detroit with a 4-0 shutout yesterday afternoon, with plenty of good involved.
In terms of pitching, Vince Velasquez had one of his better starts in recent memory. The right-hander went 5 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and struck out nine batters with two walks. The bullpen gave up only one hit in the other 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.
The bats got involved beginning in the fourth with a J.T. Realmuto solo home run. Nick Williams followed that with a solo shot of his own in the fifth before Cesar Hernandez and Rhys Hoskins drove in runs as well.
Up next is a crucial home series with the Atlanta Braves starting on Friday. The Phils are 5.5 games back of the first place Braves and a half-game back of the 2nd wild card spot in the National League. That short series may have helped the team gather momentum and confidence to take on their NL rival. And it also seems like the team is trying to improve their pitching and looking to acquire Indians ace Trevor Bauer. That would be huge for a team that needs help in that area.
