In just two outings, Drew Smyly has become the team’s second best starter. That’s sad for the other starting pitchers that are not named Aaron Nola.

Smyly had another solid start, pitching seven innings and giving up no runs off four hits with five strikeouts. He also had help with two runs in the fourth and a Rhys Hoskins two-run home run in the fifth en route to a 4-2 win over the Giants.

Things got a little dicey in the eighth when Nick Pivetta came into the game. After getting Brandon Crawford to fly out, he gave up a solo homer to Brandon Belt. He then got Pablo Sandoval swinging but then gave up another solo shot, this time to Stephen Vogt. Donovan Solano struck out right after to end the inning and Hector Neris earned the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

So the Phils won, and today’s the Trade Deadline. The team added another veteran pitcher in Blake Parker via free agency and moved Zach Eflin to the bullpen with Jason Vargas coming in. You can scratch Trevor Bauer off the list as he’s going to Cincinnati, and the Braves’ bullpen got better with Rangers’ reliever Chris Martin. We’ll see if there’s any more moves today.

Moves or not, the Phillies and Giants play again tonight at 7:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Vince Velasquez is on the mound against Jeff Samardzija.
