PA online sports betting is giving us some enticing Premier League betting options to cash in on this week. Let’s run through the action and see if we can spot some quality value plays.

Early returns in the Premier League were mixed last week. Manchester City and Liverpool, the top two teams in the league last season, both won easily. Things weren’t so rosy for Chelsea, who find themselves 19th in the table after losing 4-0 at Old Trafford to Manchester United. Liverpool and Chelsea then flew to Istanbul to face off in the UEFA Super Cup, where Liverpool prevailed on penalties. Both of those sides figure to be exhausted after their travels and having played extra time. The book knows this.. .the uninformed betting public, maybe not so much.

SOUTHAMPTON v. LIVERPOOL

The Saints aren’t exactly my idea of a side I want to ride with particularly often. They finished 16th in the league last year, and hovered around the relegation places for much of the second half of the season. Conversely, Liverpool was a juggernaut, and missed out on winning the Premier League title by a single point.

So why look at this match? Because we don’t necessarily have to pick a winner or pay long odds to come out with profit here. As noted above, Liverpool are apt to be gassed after their mid-week trip to Asia, where they played into extra time. Southampton has been sitting at home all week waiting for Liverpool to show up. On top of that, note that Southampton has scored in 14 straight league matches at home. At the same time, Liverpool has scored at least once in nine straight league matches. Liverpool will almost certainly win this match, but it will be asking too much to shut the Saints out.

Take both teams to score at -140.

NORWICH CITY v. NEWCASTLE UNITED

“Wait,” I hear you saying. “The last we saw of Norwich City, they were getting their heads handed to them last week at Anfield.”

Yes, the Canaries walked into a buzzsaw against Liverpool last Friday. The 4-1 score surprised no one; Liverpool are defending champions of Europe while Norwich merely won the Championship. But Norwich didn’t disgrace themselves in that match. For what it’s worth, they actually won the second half 1-0. More to the point, Norwich was a dominant side at home last season, going unbeaten in their last ten league matches at home with seven of them being wins. And astute readers of this column will realize that we already cashed against Newcastle last week, with Arsenal beating the Magpies at St. James’ Park. All of the reasons why Newcastle is in turmoil, which were cited in last week’s column, are only more true right now. Newcastle is in serious danger of being relegated. But not everybody knows that yet. Pretty soon, everyone will.

Take Norwich to win at +130.

MANCHESTER CITY v. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

The Premier League season is only one week old, and already the British tabloids are writing about whether Manchester City is too good for the league, which is a very lazy narrative. This supposed super team only won the league by one point last season, and could not get past the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League. Who ousted City from the CL? Tottenham Hotspur. What all of this means is that Manchester City is a terrible value bet just about every week. In this match, against a top-three Premier League side that beat them in the Champions League last season, City is -280 to win. And they probably will win, but when you look behind the numbers, they do not project to blow Spurs out.

And that is where the value lies. These teams played four times last season, twice in the Premier League and twice in the Champions League. All four matches were decided by a single goal. On what basis should anyone think that Spurs will go to the Etihad and get boat raced? Put one unit each on the Spread 3 Way (No Push) lines of Handicap Draw (+260) and Tottenham +1 (+210). One of these bets will lose, but as long as either one hits, you double your money.
