After a miserable 0-3 start to the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-4) have a chance to reach the .500 mark at the midway point if they can grab a key win over the streaking Indianapolis Colts (5-2) at Heinz Field on Sunday afternoon. Will the Steelers’ resurgence continue, or will the Colts take another step in staking their claim as one of the AFC’s top teams? Let’s answer those questions and take a look at both where and how to bet on all of the action at both PA online sportsbooks and Indiana online sports betting sites with our Steelers vs. Colts betting predictions and preview.

It would appear the Colts have the upper-hand in this head-to-head matchup, but in order to grab a win on the road this afternoon they will need to overcome some recent daunting history that has seen them lose 8 of their last 10 against the Steelers, including five straight defeats.

Both teams are dealing with key injuries on offense. The Steelers will be without running back James Conner (616 yards from scrimmage, six total touchdowns), while the Colts won’t have top wide receiver T.Y. Hilton (32 rec, 360 yards, five touchdowns).

With the setup out of the way, let’s take a look at the current odds, important betting trends, and best sportsbook promos available ahead of kickoff before making some picks and predictions.

Colts vs. Steelers Weather

The weather on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh will be seasonably cool and sunny, setting up a picturesque fall day. Temperatures will be in the mid 40s at kickoff and are expected to stay there into the fourth quarter. Southwest winds will be blowing around 10 mph, which could provide some minor complications in the kicking game, but shouldn’t play much of an overall role.

Win Probability

Let’s check out FiveThirtyEight’s ELO point spread projection to see how it stacks up with current legal sportsbook odds.

Why?

ELO and similar projection models aren’t a perfect science, but it’s a worthwhile exercise to evaluate multiple sources for pronounced disparities between the betting odds and projection models in search of potential betting value.

As for today’s game, the ELO projection model has the Colts favored by one point and with a 53% win probability. With Pittsburgh currently favored by one point at most sportsbooks, the ELO projection suggests there are about two points of betting value on the Colts.

Meanwhile, the implied win probability of FanDuel’s -112 moneyline odds on the Steelers is 52.8%, which means that the moneyline price is a shade more expensive than what the ELO projection would suggest (+113 would be in line with a 47% win probability).

As for the Colts, the implied win probability of their -102 moneyline odds at FanDuel is 50.2%, meaning there is some slight value on their moneyline price.

Colts vs. Steelers Injury Report

Steelers Injury Report

Running backs James Conner and Benny Snell Jr. will both miss this game as will offensive guard Ramon Foster. Certainly, Conner’s absence will put more pressure on quarterback Mason Rudolph, who was up and down in Pittsburgh’s win over the Dolphins on Monday night.

As for the Colts, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton will miss this one, while the corner Pierre Desir, safety Malik Hooker, and defensive end Justin Houston are each questionable.

Colts vs. Steelers Three Things to Know

  1. The Colts have lost each of their last five games in which T.Y. Hilton didn’t play.
  2. With Hilton out, expect the Colts to turn to running back Marlon Mack in this one. He will be going up against a Pittsburgh run defense allowing only 3.7 yards per carry this season, good for No. 6 in the NFL.
  3. JuJu Smith-Schuster is coming off his first 100-yard performance of the season and could have a favorable matchup today against Rock Ya-Sin if corner Pierre Desir is out. Ya-Sin struggled with Denver’s Courtland Sutton last week.
  4. The Colts could use more out of tight ends Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron. The two have combined for only 37 catches and 442 yards in seven games this season. With Hilton out and the Steelers sporting a sturdy run defense, perhaps today will be the day one emerges with a big game.
  5. The Steelers are 15-2 at home all-time vs. the Colts.

Recommended Prop Bets

FOX Bet is offering a boost that includes the Colts in Colin Cowherd’s Blazin’ 5 Special. Take Indy (-1.5) with the Raiders (-2.5), Browns (-3.5), Packers (-3.5), and Patriots (-3), and if you get at least three of those five plays right, you will win your bet at +100 odds.

Over DraftKings Sportsbook, you can grab JuJu Smith-Schuster to score at +160, which I like with Conner out and Indy’s secondary a bit banged up. Despite an up-and-down start, Smith-Schuster has gone over 75 yards and scored in two of his last three games.

Finally, FanDuel Sportsbook is giving bettors +350 on both the Colts and Steelers to win by 1-6 points. With what’s expected to be a tight, low-scoring game, I like the idea of putting a small play on both outcomes and cashing out at a profit if one side hits.

Colts vs. Steelers Betting Trends

Note: All trends date back to the start of the 2003 season, unless otherwise noted.

Why Backing the Steelers is a Good Bet

Steelers Solid With Short Lines

The Steelers are 14-9-3 ATS at home when the spread closes between -3 and +3.

Series Dominance

Frankly, I don’t believe past head-to-head performance matters all that much, but if you do, then the Steelers get a strong nod here. Pittsburgh has won the last five meetings between these two teams, 6 of 7, and 8 of 10 overall.

Why Backing the Colts is a Good Bet

Steelers’ November Struggles

The Steelers are only 9-13-1 ATS under Tomlin at Heinz Field in the month of November.

Road Warriors

The Colts are 7-3-1 ATS on the road and 5-2-1 ATS as a road dog under Frank Reich.

Three is Better Than Two

Home teams that have two straight games that are hosting a team that has won three straight games are only 9-16-1 ATS. When they are favored, they are only 5-14-1 ATS.

Teams that have won three straight games with a spread that closes between -2 and +2 are 21-14-1 ATS.

Small Favorites, Big Problems

When a home team is favored by two points or less after two straight wins, such teams are only 12-19 ATS.

When a road team has won three straight games, has a winning percentage between .700-.790, and is playing a team with a .400-.450 winning percentage, such teams are 7-3 ATS.

When a road team has a winning percentage between .700-.790 and is playing a team with a winning percentage between .400-.450, such teams are 13-7-1 ATS in November. When the range becomes .700-.750 against a team with a winning percentage between .400 and .500, those teams are 15-8-1 ATS overall and 11-4 ATS in November.

A Word on the Total

The under is 9-3 in all games coached at Heinz Field by Mike Tomlin with a starting quarterback other than Ben Roethlisberger.

Four of the Colts’ last five road games have gone under the total.

Colts vs. Steelers Prediction

It’s time to make a Colts vs. Steelers prediction.

This game is exactly what the spread suggests it is–a toss up. Both teams come in with momentum and significant injury concerns to key players on the offensive side of the football.

Ultimately, I’ll side with the Colts because I believe they are a more complete football team and because I trust Jacoby Brissett more than I trust Mason Rudolph. With the historical betting trends pointing in the Colts’ favor, I’m rolling with Indy to stay hot.

Prediction: Colts (+1) over Steelers
