May, by all accounts, was a successful month for Pennsylvania sports betting as the Keystone State remains one of the top overall sports betting markets in the entire country.

According to the most recent revenue and handle totals released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the state experienced nearly a 20% increase in sports betting revenue in May 2023 compared with May 2022 figures.

The state reported total sports betting handle of $495,585,360 and $41,104,590 in gross sports betting revenue for the month.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported gaming revenues of $479.4 million for May, including $140.97 million in PA online casino revenue.

Pennsylvania iGaming Revenue Remains Strong

Pennsylvania also reported strong iGaming numbers for the month. In total, the Keystone State recording $140.97 million in iGaming revenue for the month.

As usual, iSlots remained the top draw among iGaming users, resulting in $100.5 million in revenue. Table games were next at $37.8 million for the month, with poker only totaling about $2.5 million in May.

In total, May 2023 iGaming revenue was a 24.2% increase over the $113.3 million May 2022 iGaming revenue total.

Online Sports Betting Remains King

May 2023’s total sports betting handle came in at $495.6 million, an increase of 0.45% over May 2022. However, taxable revenue for the month, $41.1 million, increased by 17.41% when compared with May 2022’s figure of $35 million.

To no surprise, online sports betting dominated the state compared with Pennsylvania’s brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. Pennsylvania reported $460,189,893 in online sports betting handle,  compared with just $35.4 million in retail sports betting handle. The same stood true for gross sports betting revenue, with online sports betting accounting for $37.1 million in taxable revenue and retail sports betting accounting for just $4.04 million.

Pennsylvania has eclipsed more than $6.3 billion in total online sports betting handle for fiscal year 2022/2023 and $495.7 million in retail sports betting handle for the same time period. In terms of gross sports betting revenue, online sports betting has accounted for $418.7 million and retail sports betting has reported $50.2 million.

Online sports betting has led to more than $150 million in state tax revenue and retail sports betting has accounted for more than $18 million for fiscal year 2022/2023.

FanDuel remained as the top online sports betting operator in Pennsylvania, totaling over $192 million in total handle and nearly $30 million in gross sports betting revenue for Valley Forge Casino in May.
