As we near the July 30th MLB trade deadline, there are reports that Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on the block and the Phils are showing some interest:

Chisholm’s stock went straight into the toilet after he went on that show and said “no team likes the lights more than the Marlins.” He went 0-8 with four strikeouts in a Wild Card series the Phillies swept, then said in March that Marlins team leaders used to suck. General Manager Kim Ng left the team, All Star Jorge Soler declined his player option and signed with the Giants in free agency. Luis Arraez was traded to the Padres and Miami is last in the division with a 32-58 record. Only the Rockies and White Sox have worse records.

Jazz himself is having an okay season. He started slow but has pulled his slash line closer to career averages at .255/.326/.407. The slugging numbers are keeping his OPS down, .733 this year compared to .761 last season and .860 during his 2022 All Star year. But if you look at what you’re getting out of Johan Rojas et. al. then yeah, Chisholm is probably an upgrade in the outfield just for the .200 OPS boost.

Inevitably, you’re going to have fans who don’t want to lose any prospects and don’t want to make these trades. There’s really no choice. If you’re all in, then Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford, and Aidan Miller are on the table. If they’re deemed untouchable, the best you can hope for is some fringe work for bullpen depth or a bench bat. We’re talking Edmundo Sosa/JoJo Romero types of swaps. And maybe Chisholm isn’t the right guy, but if you’re a believer in a Luis Robert or Cody Bellinger “win now” move, then you’re gonna have to give up something in return.
