Morning Coaching Roundup: Austin, McAdoo, Shurmur and Shanahan
Many more nuggets this morning.
Teryl Austin
FOX Sports, as a collective, reports that Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin will interview for the Eagles job. Austin’s resume is long, but thin on major coordinator experience:
His Lions had only a middling defense this year, but he’s supposedly highly thought of.
Austin headwear status: hybrid
Ben McAdoo
One of my favorite names in the coaching class, McAdoo is young, only 38, and was the Packers’ QB coach in 2012 and 2013 and the Giants’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons. This year, the Giants were eighth and six in yards and points, respectively, and McAdoo is credited with getting Eli Manning back on track. McAdoo, however, could be the Giants’ leading candidate if they replace Tom Coughlin.
McAdoo headwear status: owns a pickup truck
Pat Shurmur
The Eagles will indeed interview Pat Shurmur, at the very least because he made the shitty 2015 Eagles look like they gave a shit yesterday (classic coach-fired bump). Adam Schefter and Jeff McLane say the interview is scheduled for today.
Shurmur headwear status: he wore a hat yesterday
Mike Shanahan
Ian Rappppppppppppppppppppppppopopopopoports:
2 unemployed names to watch: Mike Shanahan & Chip Kelly. As @MikeSilver said, both expressed interest in #49ers. Shanny did with #Eagles too
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 4, 2016
Oh God please no. He’d crumble here.
Shanahan headwear status: alcoholic granddad
Adam Gase
A date has been set for Gase, according to FOX Sports— Tuesday. He’ll also interview with the Browns on Wednesday and the Dolphins on Thursday, per the same report.
Sean Payton
Paul Domowitch elaborated on his Payton report, and threw John Harbaugh’s name into the mix presumably just for page views:
According to a league source, Payton and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh are at the tippy-top of Lurie’s wish list of candidates to replace Chip Kelly, who was fired last week.
Lurie would seem to have almost no shot at getting Harbaugh, who spent 10 years as an assistant with the Eagles before getting hired by Baltimore in 2008. Under Harbaugh, the Ravens have the third most wins of any team in the league in the last eight years and won a Super Bowl in 2012.
If Lurie somehow crowbars Harbaugh from the Ravens, I will personally mow his lawn for a year, even if he doesn’t want me to:
