Online casino gaming has become a booming industry in several states, but it’s something that I’ve never paid much attention to… until online casinos in PA went live last week.

As someone who frequently partakes in the world of sports wagering, I wanted to learn more about the casino games – particularly slots – now they they are available alongside online sportsbooks in PA thanks to the launch of SugarHouse’s online casino.

A slot man, I now am. Onward.

It’s shockingly easy to get started

Upon my first sign in, I didn’t have to make any new deposits because I was able to utilize my SugarHouse Sportsbook account thanks to PlaySugarHouse’s shared wallet– a convenient feature that allows users to seamlessly manage funds and use them in the online casino portion of the app.

I began my casino experience by trying the slot games. Whereas there have long been plenty of options for betting on sports from home – albeit by questionable means until recently in PA and NJ – playing live slots is a new and somewhat different experience.

Offshore sites have offered online casino options, but lacked the reliability of trustworthy fixed odds. With legal and regulated casino-style games, however, I was comforted knowing that I wasn’t getting scammed.

Currently, SugarHouse’s online casino in PA offers 38 different slot games. I played a handful, including Jack Hammer, Spinata Grande, Starburst, and Fruit Shop, finding easy-to-understand directions that made for an simple and fast-paced betting experience.

Feels like you’re there… mostly

I played each game for about about five spins just to get a feel. I found the themes and styles were plentiful, while the sound effects and styles rival that of the physical, on-site casino slot options.

Minimum wagers ranged between 10 to 20 cents by game, with max bets capping at $20 per pull. Some games – ones with higher earning potential – started with a $1 minimum pull.

Beyond slot play, the SugarHouse also offers Roulette games that also rival the in-person experience albeit without the thrill reaching across some sweaty guy to put down your marker. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will soon approve additional casino games, including poker, which will be available to the public in the coming months.

Still some work to do

There is no blackjack or poker yet in SugarHouse’s PA site, which is now available on iOS. We are told they are coming, though the PGCB says poker may be months away (those games require more testing to comply with regulations, particularly the Wire Act).

On mobile, some of the games require you to shift your phone into landscape view, which would be find if part of the screen wasn’t cut off. These are small, early bugs and quirks, to be sure, but they do exist.

Payments and payouts, however, function as they should. That’s most important.

A worthy addition

Admittedly, I didn’t have much success with my brief online casino gaming adventure, but I can see myself deviating over from my beloved Sunday slate, particularly during the summer months when the pickings are slim, and playing some slots.

For those of you who frequently make trips to physical casinos? You can now supplement or entirely substitute the experience with a viable and convenient online option without the gas expenses, toll money, or travel time.
