Assessing Jalen Hurts' NFL MVP Odds
The Philadelphia Eagles have only had one NFL MVP in franchise history.
It’s a wild stat and also a great trivia question to ask at the bar.
Norm Van Brocklin in 1960 is the only Eagles player to win it.
There’s no guarantee the drought ends in 2024, but Jalen Hurts does have the sixth-best odds as the regular season quickly approaches.
Patrick Mahomes, in a complete stunner, is the MVP favorite at +450. Josh Allen (+800), C.J. Stroud (+1000), and Joe Burrow (+1000) are in front of Hurts, while Jordan Love carries the same +1400 odds as Hurts at FanDuel and DraftKings.
The MVP is a quarterback award, so it’s not worth spending more than one graph on the other Eagles MVP candidates. Christian McCaffrey is the first non-QB on the MVP odds board at +5000 and good luck trying to find A.J. Brown or Saquon Barkley on that list.
A year ago, Lamar Jackson won MVP with a career high 3,678 passing yards and 821 rushing yards, which was the third-best total in his career.
Two seasons ago, Mahomes torched opposing defenses for 5,250 passing yards to capture MVP.
Hurts needs to pull off some superhuman feats inside the Eagles offense to sniff the 4,000-yard passing mark and have a shot to contend with Mahomes, Allen, Burrow and Co.
Kellen Moore’s arrival should help with an increase in total production, as I’ve outlined with Hurts, Barkley and the Brown/Smith duo’s season-long player prop previews.
Mahomes is the clear favorite, because well, he’s Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be at, or near, the top of the NFL standings again. Winning also helps sway the MVP voting.
Allen could take a step back in production in Buffalo without Stefon Diggs, but if he plays well, maybe that convinces voters to pick him.
Burrow first needs to stay healthy, but he also plays in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL and could be outshined by Jackson in Baltimore.
Stroud is riding a massive wave of public support after his Rookie of the Year campaign, and if he proves he can improve on a terrific debut, he will certainly be in the mix.
Love is a surprise to see at +1400 to win the MVP. The Green Bay Packers have a solid team, but nothing about them blows you away on paper yet. I’ll be interested to see how that number holds up throughout the season.
Jackson at +1500 or Tua Tagovailoa at +2000 could provide the best value on the board because we know they’re going to put up big offensive numbers.
The key for Hurts, though, is to push heights he’s never reached in the passing game, continue to score some rushing touchdowns and improve the Eagles from last season’s debacle. A reinvigorated Eagles team that wins the division and contends for the No. 1 seed would certainly help Hurts’ MVP case.
