The girl who cried ice

So remember the girl who complained about working conditions which led to all this nonsense surrounding the Flyers Ice GirlsWell! Here’s one: We’re hearing, from multiple sources, that many of the girls who showed up to tryout for the team yesterday were former Ice Girls (which, by itself, should tell you something about their treatment), and that included the girl believed to have been the source of the Mother Jones report. Glutton for punishment, I suppose. I wonder if she’ll make the team? Doubt it.

Sad sack alert

YouTube video

Ladies and gentlemen, Alex Henery:

Alex Henery took over the Lions kicking duties after rookie Nate Freese struggled in the first three games. After a rough performance in Sunday’s loss, the Lions might be back on the market for a third kicker this season.

Henery missed all three of his field-goal tries — including a 50-yarder in the final minute that could have given the Lions the lead. Instead, the Bills drove quickly and Dan Carpenter’s 58-yarder proved to be the winning margin for Buffalo.

All three of Henery’s misses — from 44, 47 and 50 yards — came in the second half, after the Lions built a 14-3 halftime lead.

He’s kicking in a dome, mind you. The Lions lost, 17-14, and it was all that sad sack’s fault.

Natitude

The Nationals and Giants battled in an epic, historic playoff game on Saturday night. The Giants prevailed, 2-1, in the 18-inning marathon. This, you’d think, would be a no-leave game, especially since it was played on a Saturday night and started at 5:37 p.m. Literally the perfect start time for a marathon Postseason baseball game. But nope:

Nice to see Allen around town. Also, blatant copyright infringement on the left of Philly Phaithful’s excellent It’s Always Shady design.

Agreed. He’s so generic. At least his father’s commentary has a little bite, you know?

I love Connor Barwin…

… almost as much as I love the now-vacationing Mike Trout…

… and equally as much as Jason Kelce:

Everybody’s talking about your tight pants, Jason. That camel hump will have the ladies yelling TINNNNDER.*

*That pun comes courtesy of a reader, whom I forget.

My little cousin Tyler is a maniac and turns a broken play into something better than Shady:

This is so petty and pathetic from Bose— blocking NFL players from wearing Beats headphones on-camera. Beats responded in a statement:

“Over the last few years athletes have written Beats into their DNA as part of the pre-game ritual,” a Beats spokesperson said. “Music can have a significant positive effect on an athlete’s focus and mental preparedness and has become as important to performance as any other piece of equipment.”

You can’t buy cool. And whether players were being paid to wear Beats or not (or, more likely, given freebies), you can’t deny that the Beats brand carries weight among athletes and fans. This will do nothing to help Bose.

I guess the deal doesn’t block gas-bags from wearing Beats, though. Howard Eskin was still wearing his on the sideline yesterday. Pink, with matching shoes. Cute.

Bird droppings

Chip Kelly on the rough start and the surprisingly good record: “Tough 4-1, soft 4-1, doesn’t matter. You’re 4-1.”

Nick Foles has been overthrowing receivers all year, but yesterday, he started to under-throw some of them. According to Jeff McLane (and people with eyes), it’s probably because he’s throwing off of his back foot: “Kelly said he would have to watch film to fully evaluate Foles’ mechanics, but it’s clear as day that he’s unnecessarily throwing off his back foot too often. He had Jordan Matthews wide open in the third quarter, but he didn’t step into his throw despite a clean pocket, and he short-hopped his receiver.”

Reader Joe:

But hey, let’s look at the positives, which mainly involve special teams. Here’s what Reuben Frank had to say:

The Eagles went out this offseason and really made a point to upgrade special teams, adding Bryan Braman, Chris Maragos and Darren Sproles, not to mention Malcolm Jenkins, who’s a terrific special teamer, then undrafted free agents Brandon Bair and Trey Burton, then signing Cody Parkey just before the season started. The transformation has been astonishing. With apologies to John Harbaugh, five games in, this may the best special teams in Eagles history. The impact that unit is making on this football team is staggering. Four touchdowns in five games is unprecedented, and credit goes to Howie Roseman for finding these guys and Dave Fipp for coaching them. Offense has been inconsistent, defense has been improving, but special teams has been the one constant on this team and by far the best phase of the three. It’s hard to imagine where the Eagles would be without this unit playing so well.”

Leather daddy Buzz Bissinger is all mad now because he told everyone Nick Foles wasn’t a “Super Bowl caliber” quarterback because he doesn’t have “strut,” and now he thinks everyone agrees with him and he says he’s owed an apology from the entire city. He’s not going to get it.

Chip Kelly talked to the WIP Morning Show today about his thoughts on his QB: “I think Nick is just, like the rest of our offense, there are spurts there,” Kelly explained. “You know, and that’s what I told everybody. I told our guys in the locker room after the game, I thought we need more consistency from an offensive standpoint and that’s everybody. That’s the quarterback, the offensive line, the running back, the wide receivers, the coach, everybody. All of us.”

Derrick Gunn points out that “the Eagles have won 11 of their last 13 regular-season games, including seven straight at the Linc after losing 10 straight.” That seven-game win streak is getting a lot less talk than that 10-game losing streak got.

Never forget:

Nick Foles said during OTAs, according to Jimmy Kempski, that he was working on his slides: “I’m working on it. It’s a beautiful grass field (at the NovaCare complex) and we have a slip and slide, so I’ll get it before I leave (camp).” He obviously didn’t, or he did and the problem is even bigger than we thought. Are we sure Foles knows what sliding is?
