Late night Flyers in Edmonton on a Wednesday, so you may not have seen this.

With just a few seconds remaining in the first period, Cam Atkinson scored a banger to put the Flyers on top, 3-2:

That’s the broadcast angle, but you need the close-up to see the skill check he pulled off here.

Watch Darnell Nurse bat the puck down, only for Atkinson to drag it through his legs with the left skate and blast it home in the same motion:

Awesome. I was laying on the couch trying to fall asleep (with a 6 week old finally cooperating), but made a yelping sound when that puck went in.

We’ve only played a few games this season, but it looks like the Atkinson/Jake Voracek swap was a huge win for the Flyers. Jake has five assists this year but no goals, while Atkinson is in a six-way tie for third place in the NHL with six goals so far. He’s added an assist as well, so that’s seven points in six games.

Go back to last year, and Atkinson only had two points over his first six games. And the year prior it was the same thing – two points through six games. He’s off to his best start since the 2018-2019 season, when he put up six points in his first six games.

Nice trade, Chuck Fletcher. Flyers are scoring in bunches this year. Might not have to worry about Carter Hart if the offense continues to kill it.
