Oh, Sixers.

The Sixers have sold out of season tickets – nearly 14,000 – of them and have launched a waitlist, which of course they branded:

The Philadelphia 76ers announced today details for its “Club 76” Official Fan Membership Program, after recently selling out of Season Ticket Memberships for the 2017-18 season. The three-tiered Membership Program includes benefits such as a priority position on the Sixers Season Ticket Member waiting list, guaranteed access to the team’s individual ticket pre-sale, exclusive partnership and promotional offers and an opportunity to secure future NBA Playoff tickets. Access to a position on the waiting list is free as a member of Club 76; fans interested in a priority waiting list position, premier access to tickets or additional benefits may join “Club 76 Elite” and “Club 76 Priority.” For a complete summary of Club 76 membership levels, fans can go to http://www.nba.com/sixers/joinclub76 or call 215-339-7676 to register.

But wait, there’s more!

The FREE tier of Club 76, gets you… on the waitlist and marketing emails. Swell! But if you want more from your, um, waiting experience, you can pay to have your named bumped up the list and get a couple of hats or t-shirts for your troubles, er, your money. For your hard-earned cash.

Club 76 Priority, which costs $76, gets you priority rank on the waitlist, access to a single-game pre-sale, two t-shirts and two magnets.

Club 76 Elite, which costs $176, and gets you the highest rank on the list, access to single-game playoff tickets, and two hats.

You can see the benefits of joining all levels of Club 76 here.

I’m not sure whether this is brilliant or offensive, but it’s for sure a racket. It’s not new, however. NFL teams have long charged nominal fees for the right to remain on a waitlist, and some NBA teams, like the Warriors, do the same. But the Warriors, according to their website, allow you to apply your waitlist charge toward your purchase of season tickets. It’s unclear if the Sixers will do the same. All their website says is that the charge is NON-REFUNDABLE:

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY MEMBERSHIP FEE?
The membership fee gives our members access to 76ers benefits, including your priority number on the season ticket waiting list. The membership fee is non-refundable.

CAN I GET A REFUND AT ANY POINT?
The membership includes many benefits, including merchandise and other 76ers items, and it is non-refundable.

So, to recap: The Sixers have created a branded club for waitlist members where you get the privilege of receiving more marketing emails, and, for a fee, priority status and generic swag. Trust the process.
