Voila_Capture304On Inside the NFL this week, Phil Simms, ranking the 64 offensive and defensive units in the league, put the Eagles offense at 60. Why? Jordan Raanan of NJ.com has the transcription of Simms’s’s’s’s’s explanation:

“I put the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense as one of my bottom five. Why did I do it? Not that they are one of the worst five units in the NFL. It’s because, ‘It’s going to be one of the fastest units we’ve ever seen. What are you going to do to stop? The NFL is … it’s going to be unbelievable.’

How is that working out? Is it just the most unbelievable thing you’ve ever seen?”

That doesn’t even make sense. Basically, he ranked the Eagles so low because they’re not living up to the lofty expectation set by others.

Or are they?

The Eagles are third in the league in yards per game (425.3), behind the Broncos and Packers.

They are ninth in total passing yards (1,822), despite losing their starting quarterback.

They are first in total rushing yards (1,155).

They are fourth in first downs per game (22.6).

And they are tied (with the Chiefs!) for a mediocre 13th in points per game (24.1).

That’s probably the one area to find fault – converting – as they’ve had a ton of success moving the ball, but not enough capitalizing on it. Then again, their starting quarterback has missed two and a half games, the personnel isn’t totally what Kelly needs to run his offense, and it’s his first year as head coach. But, you know, let’s just say things to get attention, Phil Simms.

He sort of defended his stance on 97.5 The Fanatic yesterday.
